Congratulations to the U10 Wildcats who won their 3rd Bladium Indoor Soccer Championship in a row. The playoff soccer played by the Wildcats was phenomenal, as they beat La Morinda 3-1 in the semi-finals and Rockridge Sting 3-0 in the finals.

The La Morinda game got off to a slow start for the Wildcats, but they collectively roared back to control the game and posession throughout the second half. La Morinda played great soccer and moved the ball well, but the organization and team determination showed by the Wildcats captured the win.

The Rockridge Sting have always been a tough team for the Wildcats. In our earliest meetings we tied them twice and had beat them in the previous Championship game by 1 goal and in league play by 1 goal, so we knew that we were going to be challenged like never before. The game was scoreless for most of the first half as each team battled to gain posession and make something happen. The Sting controlled the ball for most of the first half, as the Wildcats played hard but on their heals. Shots were fired at our goalie, Katherine, but she made sure that we stayed in the game in an effort reminiscent of Briana Scurry of the U.S. Women’s National team. The second half became the Wildcats half as they scored 2 goals and began to take control of the middle of the field.

Although all of the girls played exceptionally well and I have spoken to each player to let them know how well they performed, there are two players that gave all they could to the team and our effort, Katherine and Janelle. Janelle played the entirety of both games and proved why our defensive is so stalwart. Katherine demonstrated a tenacity beyond her years as she defended shot after shot. Her aggressiveness and determination not to let a goal be scored earned her our commendation and a unanimous MVP honor.

Go Wildcats!

The U12 Wildcats lost a tough and very physical game to the Chivas in the Bladium semi-finals. After going up early 2-0, the Chivas were able to score a 2 pointer off of a penalty to tie the game. From there it was a battle, with a number of our players going down to injuries. With about 7 minutes left in the game, an inadvertent hand-ball was called and the Chivas player put a shot on goal that was perfectly placed, for a 4 point lead. The Wildcats put up a ferocious battle and shot as much as they could, but they couldn’t seem to get it past the Chivas goalkeeper.

The physicality of the game and the determination showed by both teams made it a very exciting game to watch, and it was definitely playoff soccer at its best.

Wildcats, we are extremely proud of you. You have come very far in only two seasons together and it was a joy to have you on our team. We wish everyone the best as they go on to play on the various teams throughout the area.

Keep in touch!

The U12 Wildcats rebounded ferociously from the loss last week with a revived offensive display to beat The Liberators 12-2. The work that we did during the week to focus on attacking and finishing paid off with a flurry of goals throughout the game. Sam and Sarah performed a wonderful overlap and earned all U12 players some ice cream. You girls came to play and did a wonderful job, as there was a lot of individual skill demonstrated throughout the game that we’ve been working on during the season. Leah, Rebecca, and Kayla all had wonderful headers.

Things to work on this week:

Continued improvement of movement off the ball

Passing… getting your head up sooner after beating an opponent and making a decision to pass, shoot or dribble

Defensive communication

The U10 Wildcats defeated the Tigercats 7-5 in a game that would make all feral cats proud. The Tigercats struck first and took the lead 2-0. The Tigercats presented a problem the Wildcats hadn’t faced in quite awhile, a team that had very good ball control and a lot of speed at the forward position. It was a great lesson for our defense, because they have come to rely too heavily on the fact that they are fast and can recover from poor positioning or over-aggressive play. Emma showed her versatility by taking over a defensive position and playing it superbly to help shut down the Tigercats in the second half. Emma’s effort combined with Katherine’s superb goalie skills proved the buttress the Wildcats needed to bring home the win. Great job girls!

Things to work on this week:

Defensive body positioning

Poke tackle/block tackle – when and how to use them

Containment – how to approach attacker to contain their direction of movement

Goal side is not only horizontal, but vertical (goal side to the center of the field to cover the attacker)

Everyone played well and didn’t quit when we went down so early in the game. I love the “never say die” attitude our girls demonstrate.

The Wildcats played a superb game and lost to Chivas 3-2. With a 1-0 first half it was a battle of wills throughout the game. The Wildcats defense was phenomenal this weekend and learned their lessons well from the practices during the week. The Chivas defense put up a great fight too and our forwards just couldn’t seem to finish, even though they had thrown a barrage of shots at the various Chivas goalies. Unfortunately our lead striker, Cheyenne, went down with a knee injury and we couldn’t seem to get the chemistry back amongst the forwards to get the ball in the goal. Cheyenne is ok and we hope to see her back next game. She is a tremendous leader and can rally her teammates with her “lead by example” play.

Once again all of the girls played with tremendous heart in a very physical game against a very talented team. We are proud of you, your effort, and seeing everyone take the lessons of the week and put them into effect in the game.

Things to work on this week:

Shooting

Dribbling

Passing to space/through passes

Forwards making effective runs into space

After going down 4-0, the Wildcats came back with ferocity and a tenacious defense to only lose by one goal 4-3. Much like the U10 Wildcats we started off slowly, us coaches have got to figure out how to get everyone’s game readiness up.

Good points on the game:

Kelsey had a wonderful volley into goal

Cheyenne was able to find the corner of the goal on a kickoff

I think we found another goalie, as Selina did a wonderful job – great call coach Eric.

Team effort – you guys battle and battle and don’t give up… you make everyone proud

Things to work on:

Marking up on opponents, we gave 2 goals to the other team because we didn’t mark up well enough

Dribble to pass, Dribble to shoot… too much kickball

Forwards need to get to the ball before the defenders

Wednesday begins our prep for the next tough game, which will be against the Chivas.

Make sure to juggle and do the Coerver drills this week for at least 10-15 minutes/day.

After a very slow start the Wildcats came roaring back and beat the Fireballs. Following an immediate attack from the fireballs which required an amazing save from Riley, the Wildcats came roaring back. Their play continued to improve through the first half and the second they showed us how well they play with some nice passing and some good communication on the field. We gave up a goal at the end of the game, but Kassie and Andrea handled the tactical situation correctly, it just so happened the attacker got off a very good shot.

Things I’d like that we work on during the next week:

Communication – girls you need to talk more out there. You do some of it, but we need more. We’ll practice yelling at each other on Thursday .

We have a habit of starting slowly… let’s figure out what it takes to get pumped up and play the first half how we play the second. Maybe head-butts from the coaches, or kicks to the shins pregame will help

Wall passes/give and goes – we definitely need to work on passing and moving

Overall a grade of a B.

Practice your Coerver drills this week.

Today’s game was extremely close with the Wildcats coming back from a 2 goal deficit and battling through to capture a very tough fought victory against a very good team, the Chaos. The determination and fight shown by our girls should make every parent proud. The girls play with their complete hearts and they definitely do NOT have the word “quit” in their vocabulary.

We are extremely proud of the girls and we hope the girls can see that practice is paying off. Recently we’ve been working on headers and many of the girls were showing off their newly acquired affinity to put their noggin on the ball. We’ve come a long way in two short sessions and games like these really allow the girls to demonstrate how much they’ve grown and come together.

All we can say is WOW!

Wildcats win 7-6.
