Remember the movie Monster’s Inc.? The Monsters generate their city’s power by scaring children, but in the end they find that children’s laughs provide 10x the power. Creativity is the same… it is powered by joy and passion. Scaring children as a means to get them to not make mistakes only kills the passion, enjoyment and potential creativity.

Have you seen a recent FC Barcelona game? After a goal their is euphoria from the players… the more magical the goal, the more congratulatory the celebration. Everyone appreciates FC Barcelona’s technical play, but they really love the creativity they show to break down defenses. The formula is quite simple:

Technique is paramount – you’ve got to have belief in yourself and your teammates to take the risks that lead to creativity – you only get that by having sound technical ability.

Culture of Support – if your teammates and coaches recognize and appreciate your attempts at creativity, whether they were successful or not, the creative machine is fueled with a constant stream of renewable energy.

Barcelona probably has 40+ buildups each game to the goal and often they only result in 1 or 2 goals… not a good ratio, so consistency of belief and support is

Creativity comes from having tremendous skill and having the freedom to make mistakes. If you are not in an environment that is supportive, you won’t take risks. How many players worry about making mistakes on the field because the coach or parents freak out about losing the ball? That’s rhetorical… too many. Building a level of trust with your players takes time and the older they are, it takes seasons. Why? Because they need to unlearn the fear of making mistakes. Only then can we unlock that creativity, that joy and the passion.

For those that need a little Ivory Tower support, below is a blurb from The Harvard Business Review blog that addresses creativity in companies. Everyone is chasing the creative and the innovative, but the powers that be don’t reward creativity… they punish the unproductive, and reward the robotic… so what type of player are you going to get with that approach.

Tony Schwartz

Tony Schwartz is the president and CEO of The Energy Project and the author of Be Excellent at Anything.

Myth #3: Creativity is genetically inherited, and it’s impossible to teach.

In a global economy characterized by unprecedented competitiveness and constant change, nearly every CEO hungers for ways to drive more innovation. Unfortunately, most CEOs don’t think of themselves as creative, and they share with the rest of us a deeply ingrained belief that creativity is mostly inborn and magical.

Ironically, researchers have developed a surprising degree of consensus about the stages of creativity and how to approach them. Our educational system and most company cultures favor reward the rational, analytic, deductive left hemisphere thinking. We pay scant attention to intentionally cultivating the more visual, intuitive, big picture capacities of the right hemisphere.

As it turns out, the creative process moves back and forth between left and right hemisphere dominance. Creativity is actually about using the whole brain more flexibly. This process unfolds in a far more systematic — and teachable — way than we ordinarily imagine. People can quickly learn to access the hemisphere of the brain that serves them best at each stage of the creative process — and to generate truly original ideas.

Unfortunately, many coaches fail at their ability to properly motivate and balance their criticism. I’ve seen coaches who constantly criticize their players (U9s) to those who impart the fear of making a mistake into their players (U12s) to those that are extremely ineffective because they only know how to give good, nice, and positive feedback (U10s).

Each one of these coaches are making drastic mistakes and hurting the most important muscle of our young players, THEIR BRAINS. The damage to self-confidence and self-awareness can be extremely damaging to the player in the short term and eventually kill the passion that we so much want to see in our kids as they get into their most difficult teen years.

Parents and coaches alike can use the information below to help manage their “feedback” approach. Try it and see what the immediate effects are and once you see how well it works immediately, make it part of every interaction you have with your children and players. Then go get Mind Set, by Carol Dweck and begin to understand how important words are to affecting those little people we are molding.

The below is taken from MindSet Works:

Rule #1: When things go wrong, keep it real. It’s not easy to tell a child that they screwed up, and knowing this may cause anxiety, disappointment or embarrassment. But don’t make the mistake of protecting a child’s feelings at the expense of telling them what they truly need to hear. Remember that without honest feedback, kids can’t possibly figure out what to do differently next time.

Also, don’t take away a child’s sense of responsibility for what went wrong (assuming he or she is in fact to blame), just because you don’t want to be “hard” on them. Letting children off the hook for their own mistakes, telling them that they “tried their best” when it’s clear that they didn’t, may leave kids feeling powerless to improve.

Rule #2: When things go wrong, fight self-doubt. Children need to believe that success is within reach, no matter what mistakes they have made in the past. To do this,

Be specific. What needs improvement, and what exactly can be done to improve?

Emphasize actions that they have the power to change. Talk about aspects of performance that are under their control, like the time and effort that were put into a practicing, or the study method which was used.

Avoid praising effort when it didn’t pay off. Many parents try to console their child by saying things like “Well honey, you didn’t do very well, but you worked hard and really tried your best.” Why does anyone think that this is comforting? For the record – it’s not. (Unless, of course, it was a no-win situation from the start).

Studies show that, after a failure, being complimented for “effort” not only makes kids feel stupid, it also leaves them feeling like they can’t improve. In these instances, it’s really best to stick to purely informational feedback – if effort isn’t the problem, help them figure out what is.

Rule #3: When things go right, avoid praising ability. I know we all like to hear how smart and talented we are, and so naturally we assume that it’s what kids want to hear too. Of course they do. But it’s not what they need to hear to stay motivated.

Studies conducted by Carol Dweck and her colleagues show that when children are praised for having high ability, it leaves them more vulnerable to self-doubt when they are faced with a challenge later. If being successful means that a child is “smart,” then they’re likely to conclude that they aren’t smart when having a harder time.

Make sure that you also praise aspects of your child’s performance that were under their control. Talk about a creative approach, careful planning, persistence and effort, and a positive attitude. Praise actions, not just abilities. That way, when your child runs into trouble later on, they’ll remember what helped them to succeed in the past and put that knowledge to good use.

Sound advice from a great organization, now go get that book (Mind Set) and get better at molding your children and/or your players.

By Dev K. Mishra, M.D.

Here’s a revelation: eat the least processed food you can find.

Right, that’s not a revelation. You’ve heard it before but it’s not an easy thing to do when feeding the typical American teenage athlete. But it can be done, especially if you try to stick to the 80/20 rule that I’ll outline below.

There are a lot of different diets and recommendations around but the number of choices is very confusing, and frankly, I’m not sure all of them are safe for young athletes. What we’re trying to do with a young athlete is make them as healthy as possible to improve their sport performance — but more importantly I believe that we can set them up with good habits for a lifetime of healthy eating.

What I’m talking about here is eating as close to natural and minimally processed foods as possible. Some nutritionists call this “eating close to the ground” and other call it “eating clean,” etc., and it means stepping back to the old days of eating the most nutrient-packed and least processed foods you can find.

It means shopping on the edges of the grocery store and not down the middle of the store in the pre-packaged frozen foods section. The nutrients, vitamins, and minerals found in natural foods will almost always lead to an improved health profile, improved performance, decreased body fat if the child is overweight, and increased energy levels.

Examples of good food choices for the young athlete
It’s hard shopping for young athletes because they can be pretty set in their ways and are heavily influenced by their friends — who may be eating poorly. Here are just a few examples of what you should aim for in the food choices:

Fruits and Vegetables

Apples, bananas, berries, kiwis, oranges

Dried fruits as snacks

100 percent fruit smoothies from places like Jamba Juice Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, collard

Beans and lentils

Avocado

Meat, Fish, Nuts, and Dairy

Lean meats: chicken, turkey, lean beef

Fish: tuna, salmon

Nuts: almonds, walnuts, macadamia, pecans, cashews

Dairy: low fat milk, low fat yogurt, eggs

Bread, Cereal, and Grains

Bread: 100% whole wheat or whole grain, rye, sourdough

High fiber cereal such as Kashi or Cheerios.

Oatmeal

Couscous

Let’s get real, kids will be kids: the 80/20 rule
The guidelines above represent the ideal situations but the practical matter is that it’s impossible to have a young athlete follow these suggestions all the time. That’s where the 80/20 rule comes into play.

The 80/20 rule means that 80 percent of the time you stick with the healthy eating rules and 20 percent of the time you’re allowed to “cheat” and stray from the ideal. When one of your teammates has a birthday and cupcakes are the post-game “snack”– go for it and enjoy it with your friends! Having a (very) occasional burger, fries, and soda? OK, then do the best you can with your other meals that week.

Be realistic and do the best you can, when you can. You’ll live a healthier life for the effort and it will allow you to perform at your best during games.

These five principles of defensive play are the key to good team and individual defending at all levels of the game.

Pressure/delay – To prevent attackers from penetrating your defense, the first defender (the player nearest to the ball) should apply immediate pressure to the ball carrier. His objective is not to win the ball, it is to slow the attack, get the attacker’s head down and to try to force the attacker into a place where he cannot shoot. However, if your first defender is outnumbered he should not put too much pressure on the ball carrier. Instead, he should try to delay the attack by dropping back. This should allow time for other defenders to regain their positions. When support arrives, your first defender should increase the pressure on the ball carrier.

Key coaching points for the first defender:

Move in quickly but slow down when you get to within about one metre of your opponent.

Approach at a slight angle, ideally so you are forcing the attacker towards the side line and away from the centre of the goal.

Watch the ball.

Be patient.

Cover/support – The defender who is second closest to the ball takes up a position between the first defender and the goal and provides cover. His role is to take over the job of first defender if the attacker gets past his team mate. The distance from the first to second defender is not fixed but he should be close enough to be able to put immediate pressure on the attacker if required. But he should not be so close behind the first defender that the attacker can beat both of them by simply pushing the ball past them. Generally, the quicker the attacker is moving, the further away the second defender needs to be. If the attacker is moving very slowly or is stationary, the second defender can close right up and work closely with the first defender.

Coaching points for the second defender:

While the first defender watches the ball, the second defender watches the attacker.

Make sure the first defender can feel and hear your support: tell him you are covering him.

Balance – While the first and second defenders are working on the attacker with the ball, the rest of the defence provides balance. Their job is to cut off passing options, watch for other attackers making runs and to take on the role of either the first or second defender if the need arises. The third line of defense has to work hard: they must be continually aware of where they are on the field in relation to the ball carrier and other players. They should always be able to see the ball.

Key coaching point: work together as a unit. Stay connected to each other. If one moves, you all move.

Compact(ness) - To avoid leaving gaps in the defense that can be dribbled or passed through, defenders should concentrate their numbers in the area of the pitch between the ball and the goal.
Counter attack – The defense needs to have depth. One or more players should stay in an advanced position (between the ball and the opponent’s goal) and if your defenders win the ball they need to play the ball forward at speed.

The principles of play are the building blocks upon which all youth soccer teams should be built.

I’ve been talking to parents recently, because tryouts are upon us, and I keep getting the “I thought competitive soccer’s goal is to win.” I love this because the point of playing any sport is to try to win, otherwise why bother playing a game. The difference is the perspective taken by the coaches and the program. Overall competitive soccer means you are entering into a structured soccer development program with professional coaches and you will be playing similarly coached teams at similar talent levels.

Competitive

Perspective - A competitive coach who thinks long term when they are developing players. A competitive team is often together for many years, so the competitive coach can take a long view of development and work on the foundations that will pay dividends when the players are 15, 16, 17 years old.

Level of play – Competitive soccer is competitive because the players are developed and play with and against players of equal or less skill. Even kids on the playground will even up teams, if they are lopsided, to ensure a good competitive play. You only get better by playing against better competition, raising your standards and working hard to be better. Playing against kids you can dominate easily is very ego driven and doesn’t lead to long-term development or opportunities. Studies have shown that ego driven development (measurement against peers, vs. goal driven development (improvement of individual goals) result in players dropping out when the going gets tough. The goal driven player perseveres and continues working hard to get better.

Playing time – I often hear that in rec soccer we get at least 1/2 the game of playing time. I’ve got to say, in competitive soccer, at the younger ages, your players should be getting the same basic guarantee. Coaches that are getting paid want your player and you to be happy. They also want the players to develop, which only happens on the field. As the players get older, in their teens, this may change, a coach may make the decision not to sub in a tight game or in a championship game. My perspective is that, if you are on my team, you are going to play. Most competitive coaches at the youth level, worth their salt, have the same beliefs.

Tryouts – The dirty word… Tryouts are interesting and vary from league to league. But, at the youngest ages… kids are usually not “cut”. U11 and below, you will often see as many teams put together as there are enough willing players and parents. All leagues at the younger ages should call this “PLACEMENT” instead of tryouts. The reason being is that the kids are so young and at the beginning of their soccer lives. Professional coaches know that with guidance and patience, most of the kids will become substantially better. A whole year of development vs. a kid playing 3 months of recreation soccer is like a Julliard professor teaching your child to play the piano vs. a random person picked off of Facebook.

Cost - It is interesting to me that parents will pay tutors, karate teachers, piano teachers, boxing coaches, sewing instructors, singing instructors, but they balk at paying a coach with many hours of coaching courses and experience.

There are major differences, but those differences aren’t really about winning or losing… they are about commitment to soccer and the passion to learn soccer from, in most cases, professional coaches.

I love competitive soccer or “committed soccer” because of the following reasons:

You get to really know your team mates, they become like family

You get to train a lot under the watchful eye of a person that is passionate about the sport and who has a wealth of knowledge (you usually don’t get this at the recreation level) and patience

The passion is contagious. Who doesn’t want their child to find and embrace something that can give them many life skills. The life skills that can be learned are:

Understanding teamwork – very important for careers when they get older

Passion – how to love something and want to do it as much as possible

Discipline – doing things that are tough to get better

Dedication – The will to work hard to get better at a desired activity

Physical fitness – you run constantly in soccer, you begin to understand your body and what fitness really is about

Friendships – built in almost every activity at practice and on the field

Responsibility – on the field, at practice

Determination – how to impart your will in the game

CONFIDENCE – ability to take on difficult situations, interact with many different people, speak in groups

I’m sure you can think of more, but the above are pretty good reasons. If you are looking for a wonderful learning experience, you should consider competitive soccer. I can’t say its the same everywhere, with every coach or team, so do your diligence. But, my kids play competitive soccer, so I do practice what I preach.

First, the majority of coaches are not charlatans and the charlatan title definitely doesn’t apply to those volunteer coaches out there doing their best. The charlatan tag has to do with coaches that are collecting a fee for their knowledge and expertise. Their hearts are usually in the right place, but they may not be very good coaches. Read on to see how your coach stacks up.

I recently had the great fortune to read the article “How to Navigate Your Child’s Path” by By Christian Lavers. I, obviously, think he was a little generous on the title of his article, but you can read the whole of what he has to say to form your own option. The most poignant section for me was:

Unfortunately, no matter how much you research your decision, you may make a mistake — the world is full of great salesmen. To minimize the impact of a bad decision, you must be able to recognize when the coaching your child is receiving is slowing their development. Without being a “helicopter parent,” be mindful when watching your child’s team play:

Are players encouraged to solve problems and think, or are they simply running around and kicking?

Does the team try to possess the ball (good sign), or do they seem in a rush to go to goal immediately every time they get the ball (bad sign)?

Is coaching in the game given to players away from the ball (good sign), or is the coach joysticking the player with the ball (bad sign)?

Is most of the coaching concerned with “working harder”? (What do you do when “working harder” is no longer sufficient because of a lack of knowledge or skill?)

Does the team rely primarily on serving the ball forward to a fast player up front to score, and on a fast player in the back to cover for mistakes? (Very bad sign)

Does the team play differently at the end of the season than it does at the beginning? Is your child a noticeably different (and improved) player?

Pretty interesting pieces of advice and I hope parents think a little about what they are paying for in today’s world of Youth Soccer. Even if soccer isn’t something you’ve grown up with, you should be able to use some of the above items and decide if you are putting your player in the right place, or just throwing money and time away. Don’t be rash and decide after a few games. It does take time to build a team style, especially if the team is very new. So, give the coach at least a year. If they’ve had the team for a number of years and the above is still true after you watch for awhile, you probably want to look elsewhere for a coach. After all, would you pay a piano teacher $50 an hour for your budding pianist to only be able to play “Mary had a little lamb”?

Paul Gardner, a Soccer America columnist, recently wrote an article where he said, “We can only base our judgments on what we see from the coach’s team in action,” — Actions speak louder than words, so stop listening and start watching. If the coach says something but keeps getting the same result on the field, it isn’t working.

Pia Sundhage recently mentioned that the players she is seeing come into the U.S. Women’s team are lacking technical and tactical skills and the rest of the world has caught up to the USA.

Technique + Fitness + Focus will result in better tactical play. I often watch other coach’s practice and see laziness from the players. Walking to get water, going through the motions in the drills/activities, too much space, so there aren’t game like conditions. Well, these teams aren’t going to grow because they aren’t being challenged.

How do we get the players to that next level. First, we need to always concentrate on technical skills… every practice should have some time devoted to technique.

Tactical awareness requires three things:

TECHNIQUE. Movement off the ball and quick movement of the ball requires that players have superb passing, receiving and dribbling technique… that’s why it needs to be covered everyday in practice.

CARDIO/FITNESS: I know a lot of coaches don’t involve any kind of cardio into their practices, but how can you make smart tactical runs if your brain is lacking oxygen? How can you fight off a 1v1 situation and then have the wherewithal to pass it to a teammate and continue your run? Cardio can be incorporated every practice too, so it isn’t a huge chunk of time, but it keeps your players on the peak of their fitness.

FOCUS: We need to challenge the players to think faster and focus. In the day of the ipod, ipad, wii, texting and whatever else our kids constantly get distracted by, we need them to learn to focus. Decreasing space in the SSGs and having consequences for unfocused play, will get them focused. I often see coaches distract their own players during the valuable 1.5 hour practice, by asking questions that have nothing to do with the activity – like stabbing yourself in the eye when you are taking a vision test.

To get tactically superior play, you need to be sure your players are physically fit, technically sound and focused. Playing small-sided games with too much space, not having intensity at practice, or not including cardio (with or without the ball) will not get you solid tactical play.

“You play like you practice,” is a favorite quote of mine from Vince Lomardi, a guy who knew a lot about developing good teams, players and winning some too.

I’ve been able to watch a U12 girls team go through the trials and tribulations of injuries this year, from stress fractures to pulled quadriceps muscles to sprained ankles, hamstring strains, sprained ankles, plantar fascitis and fluid in the knee – all by different players. Girls’ physical and hormones start to change drastically at age 12 and it becomes very important to approach warm-up, cool down and even strength building in a very disciplined manner and a mandatory part of the practice.

I don’t care if you have the most gifted player in the world, the once in a generation type player, they can’t perform if they are injured. So, here is some great information on warm-up and cool-down. Parents, it is important the coaches address this. Coaches, it is your responsibility to protect the health, as best you can, of your players.

Warm-UP!

The purpose of a warm-up is to gradually increase your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen consumption, and the elasticity and heat of the active muscles. A warm-up will also release adrenaline, increase the dilation of blood vessels, and enable oxygen in the blood to travel at a greater speed. A warm-up increases the production of synovial fluid located in the joints, reducing friction, and allowing for more efficient movement. Other advantages include an increased speed of muscle contraction, an increase in the metabolism of the muscle, and an increase in the induction of nerve impulses. And psychologically, a warm-up prepares us for the task at hand, and gets us involved in the process.

Graduated increase in heart rate and body temperature – slow jog, slow dribble, juggling of the soccer ball

Dynamic stretching/range of joint motion – warm-up the joints, hopping, skipping, windmills.

Graduation to proper training intensity – increase activity to get to the activity level of the game. SSG of keepaway with limited space, smaller than in practice. Increase the intensity.

Cool-DOWN!

This is the most forgotten part of a sports activity, but very important to fend off injury, to ensure your body recovers quickly and to ensure your muscles stay elastic. The number-one goal of the cool-down is to decrease your heart rate. Cool-down helps prevent blood pooling in the veins, and also guarantees adequate circulation to the heart, brain, and muscles.

Decreasing your heart rate – A practice or game should be completed with a jog for at least 5 minutes, followed by 1-2 minutes of walking. If the practice/game was especially intense, a longer jog or walk may be necessary for the heart rate to slow down.

Static stretching – The body is at its warmest point at the end of a practice/game, which is the perfect time to increase overall flexibility. This is the time to hit all the major muscle groups. Static stretching is slow and constant and held at an end position for up to 30 seconds. This form of flexibility training is the most effective way to increase range of motion in a joint, and might in fact improve speed and jumping ability.

Decreasing your body temperature – should be slow and gradual. Don’t strip off clothes, take shoes off in cold weather. After the game on a cold day, conduct the cool-down in your sweats. On a hot day, removing your shoes while stretching may be a really good idea and soemething to do during the static stretching.

I hope this helps, because I spent plenty of time as a youth player injured and it is not fun. You lose confidence in your ability the longer you are out, the other players are progressing and getting better and you have to watch. Actually, another good subject I’ll cover is the Coach/Parent/Player role to work through injury. Because, even if you do everything correctly, an injury can still happen.

Younger ages, due to their inherent flexibility and youth, don’t require the same focus on the warm-up. Although, it is good policy for coaches to start getting the players and parents introduced to the concept at the U10 age.
